Footnotes

  • Provenance: H.R.N. Norton, London, no.91, label, prior to 1948.

Exhibited: Chinese Jade: Illustrated Catalogue of an Exhibition held by the Oriental Ceramic Society, London, 1948, Catalogue no.160, illustrated pl.IX.

The present lot is one of the finest examples of scholar's objects made for the Imperial Court. It is an exceptional result of combining the seemingly modest yet highly elegant almost flawless pale green stone body with the contrasting intricate lappet crown that would have originally been inset with extravagant gems.

The present lot also stands as a testament to the refined eye of H.R.N. Norton, who was active in Chinese Art from the early 1900s, a time of upheaval in China, which led to Imperial works of art reaching the West. Norton dealt in Chinese Art but also built an exceptional private collection of rare Chinese ceramics and works of art.
