Footnotes

  • Chengxiang mu (lignaloes) is a particularly fragrant wood which was also used for incense, along with sandalwood. Vessels and objects for the scholar's desk made from the wood are generally characterised by being made of separate sections joined together, suggesting that is was commonly found in small pieces. For a discussion of the wood and a small brush rest see G.Tsang and H.Moss, Arts from the Scholar's Studio, Hong Kong, 1986, Catalogue no.199. A Chengxiang mu libation cup from the Water, Pine and Stone Retreat Collection was recently offered at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 8 October 2010, lot 2223.
