Footnotes

  • The superb craftsmanship required to produce the present cinnabar lacquer 'treasure' box and stand represents not only the Qianlong Emperor's appreciation of the works of art that would have been contained in the box, but also his all-encompassing but yet detailed approach making the packing into an art form which merited treasuring and appreciation itself.

Compare a larger lacquered wood 'treasure' box with a similar wan emblem design on the top and diaper patterns on the side, each side with a right-hand opening drawer, which was used to store snuff bottles, illustrated in The Palace Museum, The Imperial Packing Art of the Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2000, pl.103. A similar pair of 'treasure' boxes and stands, but with key-fret supports, was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29 November 2005, lot 1568.
