Footnotes

  • Provenance: an Italian private collection, Lombardy, collection no.279.

The four-lobed form and design of the present dish closely follows that of cinnabar lacquer dishes of the Yongle period. For a Yongle mark and period example see Collections of the Palace Museum: Carved Lacquer Ware, Beijing, 2008, pl.24. This form was admired in the Jiajing period, exemplified by the Collection's quatrelobed cinnabar lacquer dish carved with dragons, Jiajing mark and period, ibid., pl.91.
