Footnotes

  • Provenance: John Constable

Liu Xiren was just 20 years old when he painted this jar and is thought to be the earliest recorded piece painted by this artist.

The inscription reads 'Repairing clothes for the New Year. Painted in the Middle of Autumn 1926 by Liu Xiren of Nanchang on a visit to Zhushan [Pearl Hill]'. This is apparently the earliest recorded piece painted by this artist. The painting on the jar (and title) refer to a Chinese family tradition of cleaning and repairing clothes prior to the Spring Festival, so that all is in order and neat and tidy for an auspicious start to the New Year.

It is very interesting to note that the porcelain available to enamellers at that period was often of quite low quality. For this reason Liu was required to incorporate natural holes and pools in the glazed surface of this jar into his elaborate decoration, which he managed to do quite successfully except where the porcelain was reserved in the white.
