Painted around the body with a continuous riverscape dotted with small boats, a traveller, a fisherman and small rustic retreats, the double-domed cover with a wider continuous scene painted in a similar style, cover and base both inscribed.

    The cover has an inscription which reads: 'The Autumn Colours reach the Waves, Painted in Zhushan by Zhang Zhitang'. The side of the tureen has an inscription which reads: 'Autumn Colours Reach the Hills and Mountains. Painted in Zhushan by Zhang Zhitang'. The base has an iron-red seal mark 'Zhang Zhitang'.

    Zhang Zhitang was apprenticed to a shop in Jingdezhen when still a boy. He worked for a while in Nanchang where he was able to see reproductions of Song and Yuan paintings, which greatly influenced his style of painting.
