Delicately enamelled in shades of black with long flowering stems of bamboo issuing from jagged overlapping rockwork, wood frame.

    The inscription reads: 'A bamboo outside the Reading Hall, painted in early autumn 1941 by the old man in the bamboos [Zhu Li Lao Ren - his literati name] Xu Zhongnan, from a western aspect of the Azure Hill Hall [Lou Bi Shan Guan - studio name] in Jingdezhen.

    The bamboo scene is painted in the style of the Qing Dynasty painter Zheng Bangqiao (Zeng Xie). Xu Zhongnan was famous for his painting of bamboo and was also one of the 'Eight Friends of Zhushan'.
