A famille rose rectangular plaque
Painted by He Xuren (1882-1941), dated 1932
Delicately and attractively painted with a wintry landscape, a traveller and companion crossing a snow-clad rustic bridge between long curling snow-laden leafless branches except for a pine retaining its needles, a solitary scholar at a book-laden table tucked in a retreat within a fir-tree forest in the distance.
12cm x 17cm (8¾in x 6¾in)

Footnotes

  • Provenance: John Constable
Purchased from Peter Wain in June 2002

The inscription reads 'Trudging through the snow to find Plum Blossom. A winter month of 1932. Painted by He Xuren on a visit to Wenpu'

He Xuren was famous for this painting of snow scenes and was also a miniaturist calligrapher, as can be seen on his plaque. He was a member of the 'Eight Friends of Zhushan'.
