A famille verte helmet-shaped ewer
Moulded after a European silver shape, the deep U-shaped body set to one side with a rococo handle and moulded with a bearded European face, brightly enamelled around the body with blossoming peonies, enclosed by chevron bands, with a border of moulded petals around the lower body, and floral sprays at the spreading foot.
25.9cm (10¼in) high

  • Provenance: purchased in Fontainebleu, France in June 2003

Similarly shaped European silver ewers were in wide use by the late 17th Century and ceramic versions were made in both Dutch delftware and Rouen faience in the late 17th and early 18th century. Compare a similar Chinese famille rose example illustrated by C.Jörg, Chinese Ceramics in the Rijksmuseum, London, 1997, p.268, fig.310.
