  • The arms are those of Martin. See D.S.Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol II, London, 2003, p.389 where he identifies the arms as those of Martin, and suggests a date of circa 1755. This is one of two services made after the same earlier original, and bears the arms of the Essex and Worcestershire families of Martin, for whom two other later services were also made in the second half of the 18th century. It is likely that the four main services, all made after 1750, were ordered for either John Martin M.P. of Overbury Court and his wife Catherine Jackson or one of their three sons. Howard believes that this tureen and the present service was most likely made for the eldest of the three brothers, John Martin of Quy Hall, Cambridge, born in 1724, who married Judith Bromley of Ham Court and died in 1794 without heirs.
