Footnotes

  • The volumes illustrate the important Chinese art collected by William Walters (1819-1894) and now housed in the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore. The ten sumptuously-illustrated volumes crowned his activities as one of the most important Western collectors of Chinese porcelain in the 19th century.

The chromolithographic plates were printed by the Boston firm Louis Prang, each based on a watercolour painted at the Walters residence on Mt. Vernon Place in Baltimore. In some instances, the reflection of the Washington Monument can be seen on the surface of the vessels.

Complete sets of this important publication are extremely rarely offered at auction. See however, see two sets (numbers 13 and 354 of 500) sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 3 December 2008, lot 2529 and more recently at Christie's New York, 17 September 2010, lot 1471.
