Late 16th/17th century
Heavily potted seated on a rectangular throne, wearing an aubergine official hat and rustic yellow robes with bright turquoise borders, the hands joined at the waist to hold a separate audience tablet, the face and chest reserved in the biscuit, large wood block stand.

  • For another larger (203cm high) sancai Daoist figure, representing the Celestial Worthy of Primordial Beginning, from the Tsui Art Foundation, Hong Kong, see S.Little, Taoism and the Arts of China, Chicago, 2000, Catalogue no.68, where it is noted that coloured enamel glazes, as seen on the present example, were widely used during the Ming Dynasty for both Buddhist and Daoist ceramic sculpture. A polychrome figure which may be a representation of the Daoist deity Yuan Shi Tian Zun (The Primal Celestial Excellency) of the San Qing (Three Pure Ones) in the British Museum is illustrated by by J.Harrison-Hall, Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, p.540, pl.19:2. A similar Daoist deity cast in gilt-bronze with his hair tied back and holding a tablet was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 8 October 2006, lot 1158. Also compare a similar gilt-lacquered bronze example of a Daoist deity, sold at Sotheby's New York, 27 March 2003, lot 15.
