A rare pair of gilt-bronze turquoise-inlaid mythical winged beasts
Ming Dynasty
Boldly and strongly cast crouching on their hindquarters and balanced on their looped tails, each with their forepaws raised aggressively beneath their snarling heads turned to the left and right as a matched pair, each initially cast with the most unusual feature of large wings lightly incised with scales and feathers curled down their backs, the bodies cast with recessed scale pattern, and inset with turquoise, carnelian and agate small plaques on the sides and on the ribbed undersides, fitted box.
Both about 27cm (10½in) high (3).

Footnotes

  • The dating of this lot is consistent with the result of a thermoluminescence test, Oxford Authentication Ltd, no.C109f79.

The present pair of inlaid bronze mythical beasts are particularly rare, and no other examples appear to be published. Inlaid bronze mythical beasts are more commonly modelled in recumbent positions for the use as paperweights on scholars' tables. An example of a recumbent lion modelled in the round with inlaid semi-precious stones is exhibited by R.Kerr, Later Chinese Bronzes, London, 1990, p.88.
