Footnotes

  • Finely carved soapstone figures of luohans in the collection of Sir Hans Sloane were bequeathed to the British Museum upon his death in 1753, with one acquired prior to 1718, illustrating that fine soapstone carvings of this type were in wide circulation by the first half of the 18th century. Three of these fourteen figures are illustrated by R.S.Jenyns and W.Watson, Chinese Art III, London, 1981, p.209. fig.182.
