An early Islamic bronze Ewer
Persia or Mesopotamia, 9th/ 10th Century
with globular body on a short ring foot, the long cylindrical slightly tapering neck with everted flattened rim engraved with scrolling foliate motifs, the undulating handle with eight spherical grip-points, the handle surmounted by a pomegranate thumb-piece, a band of inscription in kufic engraved below the rim, below that a band of cartouches containing scrolling arabesques, the base of the neck with animals against a scrolling ground, the body engraved with a large palmette enclosing a winged mythical beast, a hoof-shaped panel below the handle with scrolling foliate motifs
