Footnotes

  • The inscription, which is crudely written, possibly reads: bismillah baraka min allah wa or "In the name of God, blessing from God and".

This bottle belongs to small group of known vessels, which are of the same form and with the same undulating band of decoration on the main body.

Examples can be found in the Archaeological Museum, Cordoba: one example is in bronze with well defined decoration and palmettes around the shoulder; the second example is in silver, with simpler designs (Jerrilyn D. Dodds, ed., Al-Andalus. The Art of Islamic Spain, New York, 1992, p. 213, no. 12); and a third example in bronze that was erroneously published by Manuel Gomez Moreno (Manuel Gomez-Moreno, El Arte Arabe Espanol hasta los Almohades Art Mozarabe, Madrid, 1951, p. 337, fig. 398g).

The majority of vessels from this group were found in Cordoba, and the silver example mentioned in the Archaeological Museum, Cordoba was found with a horde of Caliphal silver, so date and provenance are straightforward to establish. Interestingly, the present lot is considerably larger than the known published examples, which were under 7cm. high.
