Footnotes

  • Provenance:
    US Collection.

The 9th century saw a reoccurrence of the production of luxury mosaic glass although not on the same scale as in the late Hellenistic or early Imperial Roman period and then again in the 3rd or early 4th century in Egypt when some very large pieces were produced. The Islamic objects and vessels produced were much smaller and this footed dish is a typical albeit rare example with parallels in the David Collection, Copenhagen (Kjeld von Folsach, Islamic Art, Copenhagen 1990, pp. 138, 150, nos 240-1) and the Al-Sabah Collection (Stefano Carboni, Glass from Islamic Lands. The al-Sabah Collection, London 2001, pp. 29-30).
