Footnotes

  • This finely carved figure of a peri was probably part of the architectural decorative scheme of a palace. It is notable for its attention to detail in the depiction of jewellery and costume, and draws comparison with the figure of a peri on the Nasser D. Khalili Collection enamelled gold huqqa base (Zebrowski, Mark, Gold, Silver and Bronze from Mughal India, London, 1997, pp. 62-4) and also angels found in miniatures of the period (for example, Zebrowski, Mark, Deccani Paintings, London, 1983, p. 224, no. 195).
