Footnotes

  • The text reads: Ilahi anta maqsudi wa ridaka matlubi, 'O God, you are my aim and your satisfaction is my quest.'

Besiktasli Mehmed Nuri (1868-1951) was one of the last generation of Ottoman calligraphers. He was trained by Shefqi Effendi and went on to become tutor in calligraphy to members of the Sultan's family and that of the Egyptian Khedive. He was affiliated with both the Qadiriyya and Naqshbandi mystical sects: the text used here is a pious formula used in the latter's rituals.
