A pair of fine Bombay wood Sofas
India, circa 1850-60
blackwood, carved and pierced, the openwork back serpentine-shaped with a central lobed panel flanked on either end with a higher lobed panel, joined by an openwork trailing vine band to each other and the arms, the panels with stylised tree of life designs, both arms terminating in the head of a beast, its mouth issuing a branch with leaves that scroll along the arm supports, the front seat rail with an intertwining vine border that extends around the back and sides, the front and rear legs scrolling outwards, the knees with layers of leaves and berries, upholstered seats

  • Provenance: Formerly in the collection of the late Sir R.D. Sethna, (1854 - 1933) of Esplanade House, Bombay, adviser and lawyer of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III of Baroda (reg. 1875 - 1939); acquired by the present owner's father circa 1970.

    These elegant sofas are fine examples of the type, and display the skilful carving and sensitive arrangement of motifs characteristic of Bombay furniture of the 1850s and 1860s.
