black silk of rectangular form, richly embroidered in silver and silver-gilt, a slit in the middle of the lower part indicates the opening of the portal, the whole area divided into nine tiers, each tier richly decorated with verses from the Qu'ran, words of the shahadah and invocations to God incorporated with cartouches and medallions on a cream ground, the main tier decorated with two mihrab-shaped portals, the lower tiers richly embroidered in silver and silver-gilt with scrolling floral vines and repetitive floral motifs, narrow borders and background with undulating floral motifs and scrolling floral vines

  • The inscriptions are as follows beginning from the top:

    First row: in the middle Surat al-Naml (The Ants), chapter XXVII, verse 30, flanked by two medallions containing 'God is my Lord'.

    Second row: the central cartouche bearing Surat al-Isra'a, chapter XVII, verse 80, flanked by two medallions containing Surat al-Ikhlas, chapter CXII verses 1-4 and whole surat.

    Third row: long narrow band containing Surat al-Fath (Victory), chapter XLVIII, part of verse 27, flanked by two small medallions each containing 'God suffices me'.

    Fourth row (main section): three medallions, each containing the Basmallah, the portals bearing Surat al-Baqarah (The Heifer), chapter II, all of verse 255 and Surat Quraish (Custodians of the Ka'ba), chapter CVI.

    Sixth row: the two rectangular sections on a cream ground bearing the following dedication 'This curtain was renewed in Constantinople by order of Sultan Muhammad Rashad bin 'Abd al-Majid I bin Mahmud'.

    Seventh row: the shahadah, flanked by two small medallions containing 'God suffices me'.

    Each of the cartouches on a black ground around the borders containing Surat al-Fatiha (The opening chapter).
