probably Egypt, 19th Century
rectangular, with five narrow inscription-filled cartouches above, a large pointed ovoid inscription-filled medallion, surrounded by floral vines and flanked by two stylised pillars, the border with undulating floral vines

    The inscriptions from top include:

    Lines 1, 2, 3 and 4: Sura VI, al-An'am (The Cattle), verse 54.
    Line 5: This curtain was ordered by Sultan Abdul Aziz (AH 1277-93/ AD 1861-76).
    Lines 6 and 8: This curtain was renewed by Kedive Isma'il of Egypt (AH 1280-1296/ AD 1863-1879), son of the late Haj Ibrahim, dated AH 1289/ AD 1870.

    Ism'ail assumed the title of Khedive from the sultan in AH 1284/ AD 1867. It was during his rule that the work on the Suez Canal was completed.
