The painting was commissioned by Ahmad Davatgar, who was known for his involvement in setting up exhibitions for contemporary artists. Hamadani (born in 1926) was known for his qahva khana [coffee/tea-house] paintings. An example of his work (depicting the Imam 'Ali) is is the Reza Abbasi Museum in Tehran.
