- The Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival is the largest festival in the Shan state, and lasts for almost three weeks in late September or early October. Four of the five small gold Buddhas from Phaung-daw-oo Pagoda, considered to be the Inle lake's guardians, are ferried for fourteen villages around the lake in a royal barge towed by row boats. Hundreds of boats follow the procession and large crowds of people gather on the shore to celebrate the occasion.
