with a pencil dedication slip to Edward Wilson's father: "To Dr Wilson, Cheltenham. The father of one of the best and bravest men who ever stepped, I send this portrait of Uncle Bill, to have been whose comrade on Capt. Scott's South Polar Expedition I esteem one of the greatest privileges of my life. H.G. Ponting"

  • Ponting was appointed by Captain Scott as official photographer to the Terra Nova expedition. Regarded at the time as the finest outdoor photographer in the world, his stunning images of the South Pole and the men involved brought the whole expedition alive to the public at home.
