Footnotes

  • Apsley Cherry-Garrard was assistant biologist on the Terra Nova expedition, Robert Falcon Scott's last expedition to Antarctica (1910-1913).

    In July 1911 Cherry-Garrard accompanied Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Dr Edward Wilson on the legendary trek to Cape Crozier to retrieve Emperor penguin eggs. He later recounted this experience in his famous publication The Worst Journey in the World.

    One of the youngest members of Scott's team, 'Cherry' was later part of the rescue party that eventually found the frozen bodies of Scott and the three men who had accompanied him on his final push to the Pole. These deaths would haunt Cherry-Garrard for the rest of his life, as he had been responsible for the siting of the food cache that Scott had just failed to reach.
