    LITERATURE:
    B. Lindop, Gerard Sekoto, (Randburg, 1988), illustrated p.193

Painted in the very early years of the artist's exile, the present lot was bought at the Johannesburg auction to raise funds for the Treason Trial of Mandela and his colleagues in 1956. Although Sekoto was working far away in Paris at this time, he was informed as to what fate befell his peers at home.

"This painting must have been done during that period when I felt rather unstable in mind, lacking the right place in which to work whilst at the same time trying as much as possible not to be caught up and taken directly into any of the particular schools of painting. ... Here also I tried taking my thoughts as far back as possible to the years I lived on the farm. Thinking of the round huts and the red earth. These I used to make it look quite African and far away from that which could have threatened to enclose me." (the artist, as quoted in Lindop, 1988, p.192)
