Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
With the Wolpe Gallery, Cape Town
Acquired from the above by the current owner

A similar work, Nude, is illustrated in E. Berman, Art and Artists of South Africa, (Cape Town, 1983), p.233.

Kibel went to South Africa, via a circuitous route, as a refugee in 1929. For most of his adult life he was affected by tuberculosis, which was exacerbated by terrible living conditions and poverty. He received a great deal of critical abuse at his first South African exhibition in 1931, yet he persevered and became close to several important South African artists of the day.
