- Born in Baku (in modern-day Azerbaijan) of Polish parentage, Jaholkowski studied art in Warsaw, Paris and London before moving to South Africa in 1955. He attended the Michaelis School of Art, Cape Town in 1957-58, where he studied under Lippy Lipshitz and Maurice van Essche.
