The present lot is a copy of the well-known painting by Baines in the collection of the Syfrets Trust, currently on loan to the Albany Museum and illustrated in J. Carruthers & M. Arnold, The life and work of Thomas Baines, (Vlaeberg, 1995), p.138, fig.14:

"The site for Grahamstown was chosen in May 1812 by Andries Stockenström and Col. John Graham. A decision to lay out the town was made in 1814 and in 1815 the military encampment was moved to Fort England, two miles away, leaving the town a civil establishment. When Baines arrived in 1848, Grahamstown had 'six thousand persons, of whom one fourth were coloured, and houses to the number of seven hundred and fifty'."
