RMS Carpathia a bronze commemorative medal & original box.
A shaped bronze medal, the obverse depicting the vessel amongst icebergs with the lifeboats of RMS Titanic, bordered with dolphins and surmounted by Neptune's head. The reverse, inscribed Presented to the Captain Officers and Crew of RMS "Carpathia" in recognition of gallant and heroic service From the Survivors of the SS "Titanic" April 15th 1912 Dieges & Clust NY". With a red silk ribbon. Inside a brown leatherette pasteboard box, with cream satin lining, the lid stamped "Dieges & Clust Jewelers, Silversmiths, Medaleurs 20 John Street New York". 1.4in (3.5cm) diam.

Footnotes

  • Following the disaster on April 14th, the RMS Carpathia received an emergency transmission from the striken ship and diverted from her passage to the last known location. She was the first to discover the survivor's lifeboats, and during the early hours of April 15th rescued some 705 survivors.
    On arrival at New York, the Officers and Crew were awarded medals to commemorate the rescue, presented by Margaret (Molly) Brown, one of the First Class passengers rescued. Captain Rostron was given a Gold medal and silver cup, the Officers received Silver and the Crew, Bronze medals. In total, 320 medals were presented and they are generally not ascribed to any named crew member.
