HMS Indefatigable was built as a 64 gun 3rd Rate by Henry Adams at Bucklers Hard and launched in 1784. In 1794 she was cut down at Portsmouth to a 38 long-gun frigate, with six additional carronades. Commissioned in December of that year under Captain Edward Pellew, she set forth in the spring of 1795 with his squadron to cruise the Western approaches against French Revolutionary forces. Pellew commanded the squadron until 1798 and during that period successfully captured numerous enemy vessels, the most notable being the French 74 Droits de L'homme in Janauary 1797. Indefatigable was broken up at Sheerness in 1816.

She was chosed by C.S. Forrester as the ship where Horatio Hornblower spent his time as a Midshipman.
