Footnotes

  • Provenance:
The Collection of the late Anthony Ray (1926-2009) the renowned ceramic author and scholar. Ray, who taught languages at Eton, discovered this jar in the window of an Oxford antiques shop on a Sunday when it was closed. Realising its importance, Ray approached the headmaster of Eton and was given special permission to miss classes on Monday morning while he returned to secure the purchase for his collection.

Another example of this form attributed to Florence in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, is published by Rackham 1940, no. 82. A slightly earlier example of green enamel decoration with manganese outline - considerably rarer than the familiar dark-blue of early Florentine wares - is also illustrated by Rackham (no. 47).
