A late 18th century French gold and enamel snuff box
A Louis XV French vari-colour gold and enamelled snuff box,
by Jean-Louis Désir, with the charge and discharge marks of Julian Alaterre, Paris 1773, and with later eagle's head control marks,
ovoid form, the hinged cover set with an enamelled portrait of a be-wigged nobleman in a cerise coat trimmed in gilt braiding, with a two-colour gold guilloche frame set on a cinnamon translucent enamel ground within a yellow gold acanthus border, the sides with similar enamel panels separated by rose garland hung pilasters between bands of yellow gold acanthus leaves, length 6.8cm.
