the figure of Cupid with his drapery tied with a ribbon around his waist falling to the ground, holding a torch covered in trailing roses, on a circular base, dark brown patination, inscribed Lacarriere Fres Delatour & Cie Bronzier Paris 1884, with frosted glass flame shade, the gas fitting now with an electric nozzle, 137cm high (53.5" high) excluding glass shade

Footnotes

  • The firm Lacarrière, founded in Paris in 1825, specialized in bronze lighting. They participated in major exhibitions and were awarded a medal in the 1851 Great Exhibition. In the 1870s they delivered the impressive chandelier for the Opera Garnier.

    A torchere of similar form but of smaller size with two winged putti was sold by Bonhams and Butterfields, L.A, 8th November 2009, lot 1048 ($30,500).
