'Dar es Salaam' signed 'J.H. Pierneef' (lower right) and inscribed and dated 'Dar es Salaam Feb 21 1926' (lower left) watercolour and pencil 29 x 39cm (11 7/16 x 15 3/8in).
The present lot was painted en plein air during a brief visit to Dar es Salaam:
"On 12 January 1926, the Pierneefs sailed on a freighter, the S.S. Toba, via Port Said down the east coast. They were the only two passengers on board and, since the ship had to spend from between two and six days at every port, Pierneef was often able to go out and paint the countryside to his heart's content." (Nel 1990, p.67)
A similar watercolour, dated 17 February 1926, was sold at Sotheby's Johannesburg in July 1981. Another work titled Dar-es-Salaam and dated 1926, an oil painting of a street scene, sold at Bernardi Auctioneers in February 2006.
