Footnotes
Hartebeespoort Dam, west of Pretoria, was completed in 1923. The following year, Pierneef accepted a commission from Johan Schoeman, a local property owner, to paint the area. Schoeman wanted to use the paintings as advertisements for the area, so he could sell some land.
Pierneef returned to the subject many times in his career. Probably the best known is the Johannesburg station panel of the same name. Others include Near Hartebeespoort Dam, landscape with rainbow, 1946 and a watercolour, Near Hartebeespoortdam, 1946, both in the collection of the Pretoria Art Museum.
