Reverend Jarvis Palmer worked at the Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin in Johannesburg, and in 1982 changed the name of the cathedral chapel in Parktown to St Mary's on the Limpopo, in recognition of the fact that the Braamfontein Spruit runs under the church on its way to the Limpopo River. He was also chaplain at St John's College in Houghton for many years.
