Footnotes

  • For another folio from the same Qur'an exhibited recently, see Arts de l'Islam: chefs-d'oeuvre de la collection Khalili, Institut du Monde Arabe, Tours 2009, pp. 134-35, no. 165. The same folio is illustrated and discussed by David James in The Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art, The Master Scribes: Qur'ans of the 11th-14th Centuries, Vol. II, Oxford 1992, pp. 160-61, col. pl. 40. James states that 'according to uncorroborated information, the manuscript came from the Yemen and dates from the Rasulid period (AD 1229-1454). If true, this would explain why these pages have a superficially Mamluk appearance, but clearly belong to another tradition'. James argues that Mamluk Qur'ans were rarely copied in three types of script on the same page and the black muhaqqaq outlined in gold is very rare in Mamluk Qur'ans.
