A rare pair of pale greenish-yellow jade archaistic vases and covers
18th/19th century
Each of circular section rising from a high splayed foot, finely carved around the sides in low relief with archaistic taotie masks interspersed by blossoming lotus flowers, the concave shoulders incised with overlapping pendent lappets and carved in high relief with lingzhi-fungus handles suspending loose rings, all below a key-fret border, the domed covers similarly carved with lappets and loose-ring handles and surmounted by a high bud finial, the stone of an even apple-green tone with a high polish.

    Jade of this form is rare and no comparable pieces appear to be published. The most similar example in form is a jadeite double box and cover (10.5cm high) in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, with both the vessel and the cover with three loose-ring handles and with pendent lappets above a band of low-relief carving, illustrated by J.C.S.Lin, The Immortal Stone. Chinese Jades from the Neolithic period to the twentieth century, London, 2009, p.122 (bottom right image).
