Lot Details
SHEFFIELD and SIR THOMAS MORE
"The History of King Richard the Third, (Unfinished.) Written by Master Thomas More, then one of the Under Sheriffs of London: About the year of our Lord 1513", manuscript written in a late 17th century hand, nearly 100 pages, contemporary red morocco gilt, both covers stamped with the Sheffield arms in gilt, spine gilt with three stars in each compartment, gilt edges, slight wear to spine and cracking to joints, folio, [between 1674 and 1694]

Footnotes

  • BOUND FOR DRYDEN'S FRIEND JOHN SHEFFIELD, THIRD EARL OF MULGRAVE (1647-1721), later first Marquess of Normanby and first Duke of Buckingham and Normanby; both covers stamped with the Sheffield arms of a chevron set between three garbes (wheatsheaves), surrounded by the Garter and surmounted by an earl's coronet; thus dating the binding to between 1674 (when Sheffield received the Garter) and 1694 (when created marquess). His political career apart, in the service of Charles II, James II as well as William III, Sheffield enjoyed a wide-ranging literary career, as rival of Rochester (who flunked a duel with him), patron of both Dryden and Pope, and author on his own account, his works being posthumously edited by Pope: these including poetry and literary criticism as well as several historical memoirs (as essayed in the present work by More). In Dr Johnson's judgement "His verses are often insipid, but his memoirs are lively and agreeable; he had the perspicuity and elegance of an historian, but not the fire and fancy of a poet".
