Footnotes

  • COMPLETE RUN OF THE SATIRICAL LONDON MAGAZINE, INCLUDING THE INFAMOUS 'SCHOOLKIDS' ISSUE WHICH LED TO THE OBSCENITY TRIAL AT THE OLD BAILEY.

'Oz' was first published in an Australian edition between 1963 and 1969, where it was the subject of an obscenity trial in 1964. In 1966 two of its editors, Richard Neville and Martin Sharp moved to the UK and, with fellow Australian Jim Anderson, founded the London 'Oz'. Sharp was subsequently replaced by Felix Dennis when he left the magazine in 1968.

The magazine's use of visually striking graphic art and innovative printing techniques (including fold-out posters, metallic foils and new fluorescent inks) was accompanied by biting satire on subjects such as sex, drugs, politics and war. Issue 28 was edited by a group of invited 'school kids' and included a very sexual Rupert Bear cartoon parody. It led to obscenity charges being brought against the three editors in 1971, and the infamous trial at which Dennis and Anderson were defended by John Mortimer, and witnesses for the defence included Feliks Topolski, Marty Feldman, Caroline Coon, John Peel, George Melly and Edward De Bono. The three defendants were eventually convicted and sent to prison, but their convictions were overturned following appeal.

A film based on Neville's memoir, starring Cillian Murphy and Sienna Miller, is due to be released in May.
