The dial and movement late 17th century by Thomas Tompion, now contained in a later custom made case
the caddy top case with three gilt wood ball finials over a pierced fret and spirally twisted three-quarter and quarter columns to front and rear corners respectively, the trunk with a long door of good figuring within a D-moulded edge, on a similar crossbanded base, the 11 inch square brass dial with winged cherubs head spandrels interspersed by engraved foliage, signed on the lower edge in copperplate script 'Tho Tompion Londini fecit', the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with half-quarter marks and half hour marks emanating from the inner quarter hour track, the centre finely matted and with applied subsidiary seconds dial, latched to the movement frontplate, the movement united by five latched, knopped and finned pillars, the backplate 'cut for the anchor', with inside countwheel strike on the bell 2.2m (7ft 2ins) high

    Phillips Auctioneers May 1992, lot number 264 for £12,000. In 1992, the dial and movement were contained in the walnut case that now houses lot 120 in this sale, which is later stamped 489.
    The walnut case which now houses this un-numbered movement and dial, lot 119, is not original to this clock.
