  • Anne Isabella Monck was born in Charleville, Kilmacanoge, County Wicklow, Ireland. She married, as his third wife, Cornwallis Maude (1729-1803), 1st Viscount Hawarden on 3 June 1777 in Dublin. In addition to a son and a daughter from his second marriage, Cornwallis and Isabella had eleven children, Isabella (1779-1859), Cornwallis (1780-1856), who succeeded his half brother as 3rd Viscount Hawarden, Georgiana (1781-1807), Alicia (1782-1866), Charlotte (1783-1874), Robert (1784-1861), Mary (1786-1877), James (1786-1841), John (1792-1860), Emily (1794-1884) and Francis (1798-1886). As a young Lady, Anne was painted in miniature by Charles Robertson.

    The present lot shows the mastery of Sir William Charles Ross as a painter, and in particular, his ability to capture not only a likeness but the whole character of his sitters.
