CONGO FLAG FLOWN ON APOLLO 14.
Flown flag, silk, 6 by 4 inches. Mounted with an image of the LM Antares at Fra Mauro and captions on 20 by 16 inch mat.
Inscribed below the flag by ALAN BEAN: "With the compliments of the astronauts of the United StatesAlan Shepard 10.20.71." Presented by the US to the People's Republic of the Congo, this flag was in fact refused by the Congolese government since it was out of date. The Congo had adopted it upon their independence from France in 1960, but in 1970 a Socialist regime took control, renamed the country the People's Republic of the Congo, and brought in a new, Soviet-inspired flag.
The printed caption reads: "This flag was carried to the moon onboard Apollo 14, January 31 through February 9, 1971. It is presented by Real Admiral Alan B. Shepard, Jr., United States Navy, Delegate to the 26th Session of the United Nations General Assembly."
Together with the original mailing envelope from the US Mission to the UN, to the Congo's ambassador to the UN Nicolas Mondjo.
- Note should read "Inscribed below the flag by ALAN SHEPARD."
