by Thomas Hannam & John Crouch(II), London 1807
of oval form with gadroon border and the applied handles with mask junctions, centre engraved with the arms of the island of Jamaica and Sir John Duckworth above the inscription "Presented by the House of Assembly Jamaica to Vice Admiral Sir John Duckworth in 1804 for his defence of the Island against the French fleet", length 78cm, weight 212oz, weight 6020gms.

Footnotes

  • The engraved arms are those of; the island of Jamaica, and Vice Admiral Sir John Thomas Duckworth, Bt. GCB (1748-1817).
The tray formed part of a service presented to Sir John Duckworth by the Jamaican Parliament.
His naval career began as a captain's servant and receiving his first commission at 21.
Having seen diverse action, Admiral Duckworth, now Commander in chief of the Jamaica Station, arrived at San Domingo on 6 February 1806 where he found the French squadron under Vice Admiral Liessegues anchored at Occa Bay.
The French commander turned to sea forming a line but Duckworth's squadron employed a counter strategy and in the ensuing 2-hour battle Duckworth's ships defeated the French.
This action was the highlight of Duckworth's Royal Navy Service and was the last significant sea action of the Napoleonic War. With the British Fleet in command of the sea, it destroyed Napoleon's ambitions in the Caribbean and played a major part in Napoleon's sale of Louisiana.
For this significant victory off San Domingo; Parliament awarded Duckworth an annuity of £1000 a year, the City of London presented a sword of honour and the Jamaican Parliament presented Admiral Duckworth with a service of plate which would have included the present lot.
