Portrait of Jack Loewenberg, 1958 oil on canvas 13 x 10 1/2in
Provenance: Staempfli Gallery, New York, New York Roy and Lydia Park Moore, Montecito, California Maxwell Galleries, San Francisco, California Private Collection, California Property from a New York Collection
Exhibited: Newport Beach, California, Newport Art Museum David Park 1911-1960: A Retrospective Exhibition, September 16-November 13, 1977, no. 99
Note: During Park's tenure on the faculty at UC Berkeley (1955-1960), Bischoff and Diebenkorn joined him in the now historic figure drawing sessions that gave birth to the Bay Area Figurative style. Over these five years Park's art developed rapidly as earlier experiments with Abstract Expressionism culminated in painterly depictions of the human figure.
Professor Loewenberg joined the Philosophy Department at Berkeley in 1915, but was dismissed during the McCarthy era in 1950 for refusing to take the University's controversial oath of loyalty. He was reinstated by the California Supreme Court in 1952.
