SOKOLOV (ANDREI)
'Power Station on the Moon', watercolour and acrylic on board, showing a purple lunar landscape with four cosmonauts pulling tubes from a landing craft, a rocket in the background, signed on verso, 355 x 580m., Moscow, 1967

Footnotes

  • It was a painting by Andrei Sokolov that was the first to be taken to Earth-orbit, carried aboard the Mir space station in the mid-1980s. "Power Station on the Moon" was reproduced in the book "The Stars are Awaiting Us" (1967, a copy of which is offered with this lot), written in collaboration with Alexei Leonov, a senior member of the soviet corps and the first man to conduct a space walk. The current owner of this painting acquired it directly from Sokolov, who, owing to the dearth of artists materials available in Soviet Russia, was happy to merely receive paint brushes and canvasses as payment.
