Lot 693W
A Daily Express Televisor kit, by Mervyn, circa 1934,
Sold for £1,800 (US$ 2,898) inc. premium

Lot Details
A Daily Express Televisor kit,
by Mervyn, circa 1934,
with the Mervyn Nu-Glo 16 selenium neon tube, six-spoke Nipkow disc with square hole punches, lens and disc speedo towers with typical tapering form, on plywood base (old worm); an assembly detail sheet for the kit, with full-scale board layout plan, pasted revised typed caption; a Daily Express newspaper supplement dated Tuesday March 27 1934, devoted to the television kit; a Mervyn Sound & Vision Ltd. information leaflet; and an Osram booklet for specialised lamps for use with televisors. (5) - 17in. (43cm) high

Footnotes

  • The kit, which was only available through an offer advertised in the Daily Express Newspaper, had an original purchase price £5 9s 6d.

Finding an example such as this one, in its original box is almost unheard of. However, this piece retains both Nipkow and neon in good order, with the other components ready for restoration.

Apart from homemade Televisor's, this Daily Express kit and the Plessey from Baird, were the only other common models which used the mechanical system. The first electronic 405-line transmissions, which began just two years later on the 2nd November 1936, spelled the end for this primitive 30-line technology.
