Lot Details
A large mechanical panorama of the Bayeux Tapestry,
A very rare full size replica of the Bayeux Tapestry photographed by Joseph Cundall 1874
Joseph Cundall's full size photographic panorama of the Bayeux Tapestry, with its linen backing, hand coloured by students from the School of Art, London (now the Royal College of Art). This is the largest photographic panorama made in the nineteenth century, just over 226 feet in length. It is probably still the largest photographic panorama ever made. Just six copies were made and published by the Arundel Society in 1874 using the Woodbury process, and offered for sale at the massive price of £216.00 each. It is mounted on its original oak Arts and Crafts stands, 55in (140cm) high

Footnotes

  • M.B-L comments "In 1872, as a result of delicate diplomatic negotiations, Joseph Cundall, the famous Victorian photographer, was given permission to photograph the entire Bayeux Tapestry in situ in 1872. (A copy of the letter of introduction from the Bishop of Westminster to the Bishop of Bayeux is included) With a small team of assistance, it took Joseph Cundall just over two months to complete the commission which was recorded on 185 full size glass plates (still in the possession of the V& A). Six copies were made and published by the Arundel Society, a company specialising in the reproduction of medieval art. Two of the copies were acquired by the V&A in London; one is in eight foot sections and the other is in store “no longer in viewable condition”. One copy was sent or given to Bayeux. According to the curator, it disappeared many years ago and despite intensive searching has never been found. They do however still own a half sized copy. One copy is in private hands in Wales, one copy whereabouts unknown and the sixth copy is the one on offer here. It is the only example still mounted on its original stands. Joseph Cundall’s Bayeux Tapestry is the only full sized reproduction or it ever made apart from a full sized embroidered example made by Elizabeth Wardle “and a circle of ladies” in the 1890’s, from Cundall’s photographs. This is on permanent display at the Reading Museum. The only significant damage to this copy is in the first 18 inches where it has sustained some damages to the top and bottom edges and the first vertical joint (14 inches in from the start). The original Bayeux Tapestry was made between 1080 and 1087 probably near Canterbury in England." Further research material on request and a complete DVD of photographs of the full panorama available."
